High altitude wine

Wine more than 800 meters

To be able to call a wine as a wine of height, it must be made with grapes from a vineyard at a very high altitude, usually from 800 m, to altitudes where the weather allows to cultivate the vine and mature the grapes.

The main benefit, or difference, is an enviable refreshing effect (due to its higher acidity). This is caused by the large thermal difference that occurs between day and night. Although the insolation is greater at higher altitudes, the ripening of the grapes is slower and more progressive than at low altitudes. The ripening cycle slows down and the wine gains in complexity and richness of nuances. But this does not happen at any "great height", it must be this specific height and in this specific geographical latitude.

The wind is another great ally of the vines in height, by preventing fungi and other diseases proliferate. In addition, most of these vineyards are covered with snow every year, which is a water supply, as the snow melts slowly and creates a reserve in the subsoil for times of drought. Snow also introduces nitrogen from the atmosphere into the soil, which benefits the plant's vigour.

"Great height"

In recent years, the private sector and public administration have been focusing on diversifying the primary sector, preserving the landscape and introducing new crops.

which disappeared at the end of the 19th century due to phylloxera, has reappeared in the Principality. These small wineries, located mostly around the city of Sant Julià de Lòria and represent a tourist attraction that adds to the already traditional snow and cultural tourism.

The most important wineries in Sant Julià de Lòria, Borda Sabaté, Mas Berenguer and Casa Auvinyà, Casa Beal, deserving of international awards for their products, strongly support the candidacy for the Network of Creative Cities. The appointment means for the wine sector to recognize the territory in its pure state so that people can discover it in a sustainable way, as well as to promote and protect those essential and unique elements so that future generations can enjoy it.
